A man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for the murder of his teenage son by beating him senseless with a chair, then strangling him while leaving him to die in their bathtub.

Deputy State’s Attorney Robert Levenson told the judge the Smiths raped and abused their two adopted children by beating the boy with a chair. Smith and his wife were arrested July 29 after being allegedly seen having sex with the boy on a couch.
The judge imposed a punishment that involved being told to beat the man and his wife with chairs while a jailhouse inmate was watching.
His wife and the adopted child were found to be at the home between 4 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. July 29, police said.
At 7:37 a.m., the father and son were found dead. An autopsy was performed a few hours later.
Prosecutors said Smith, 46, and his wife, who had been employed as an administrative assistant at an apartment complex, would often see the toddler asleep and beat him with chairs and a broom.
